Late night greasy pizza: just as delicious in Munich. Everyone else had ice cream, but that's not what I was craving.
Ah, good döner in downtown München. Perhaps my beef with the place nearby is that they use turkey?
After Schloß Nymphenberg, we took the tram to Jasmina's old home near Sendlinger Tor, conveniently near the Hans-Sachs-Straßenfest in the gay district. I had the chili con carne at Faun, being hungry and in the mood for meat, which surprisingly wasn't bad aside from being completely unspicy. Afterwards, the street fair.
We finally went to Wintergarten, a not-a-biergarten near our place and the crunchy pet store. Wow! It was really good. The French fries with my currywurst were perfectly done -- crispy and fresh and a huge pleasure to eat. The currywurst was also great, as were the beer and Alex's meal and the warm sunny afternoon we spent there. I was really impressed -- definitely one of the most satisfying places in our area and a place to visit again.
Our first German dish: käsespätzle! Quite delicious and easy to make -- very similar to macaroni and cheese. We made a drier, cheesier version without q sauce, and it was quite delicious. Went well with True Blood.
Muesli! We're not sure how it's made here -- yesterday we had some at a cafe that was cooked softly and deliciously. We tried ourselves this morning and it turned out okay, but not as good. We have a quest!
After a morning of working on stuff and still no bank letter, we grabbed döner from the nearby place -- better than I remember, but still definitely middling meat and bread, though the veggies are fresh -- before heading downtown for some shopping (a map, yoga and swimming stuff, and a trip to Staples).
Outdoor brunch at Conditorei Münchner Freiheit, which we'd just recently found and that was open on Sundays. We ordered too much food -- I had both rhubarb juice and the orange juice that came with my tower of food, and Alex ordered two sausages and a pretzel. We ended up splitting it and left stuffed for a midafternoon visit to the Kunstbau. The weather was nice if a bit windy, though too many yellowjackets found our table attractive for my comfort.
Delicious margaritas and quesadillas at Quaide's with his neighbors and some friends. We talked about all manner of things English, American, and German for nearly five hours. It was great, after three weeks here mostly on our own, to meet some very cool people; we're looking forward to seeing everyone again.
German theaters have beer! Awesome! And popcorn* with sugar! Um...is that standard, or just this English-language place?
And the popcorn has unpopped kernels! Something American science has exterminated, I believe.
Käsespätzle at Löwenbräu before our first film in Germany! (Inception, in English ;) )
We went to a meetup for Munich newbies looking for friends. (That's us!) It was a lot of fun -- over three hours we met people from around the world and had some good Belgian fries with dipping sauce at Pommes Boutique and some beers at Soda Bar.
Käsebreze, a quick lunch before a personal guided tour/rehearsal for a friend who's applying to be a tour guide.
Delicious homemade dinner with fresh ingredients and a raw egg in the pasta, and sauteed mushrooms. Lecker!
After reapplying at Norisbank (their mistake), lunch at a Conditorei at Münchner Freiheit: split a small Hawaiian pizza and had a glass of prosecco. Now a sports store, then the video store, then home to work.
The 5 PM pick me up at Piriquita, a place Mirian knows. We had coffee and travesseiro, a puffy pastry filled with an almond and egg mix. Delicious! Now invigorated (kinda) we're off to the beach!
Ah, a 4 PM lunch in Sintra's scenic district. The pork was good but the chorizo appetizer really stole the show. Pork FTW!
Walking around in the heat seeing another culture is exhausting. We had a snack at the Palácio Pena gift shop in Sintra, home of the summer palace, after seeing that 19th century building and before hiking out to the Moorish ruins.
